INDUSTRY PROFILE

Q & A: Erin Smith
Erin Smith Art

Q. When and how did you start working in this business?
A. The stationery side of things happened by accident. People loved my canvases — but seeing as they're handmade and not mass produced, the price point is a little higher than the made-overseas variety — and encouraged me to print them as cards. Four years ago I introduced our first 12 greeting cards, and we currently have around 90 cards in our portfolio. They are made in the U.S.A. of FSC recycled materials and can be found in more than 1,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada.

Q. What is your signature style?
A. My signature style uses vintage photographs of my family combined with my own original prose in an unexpected way. The photo typically looks fairly unassuming and the prose is snarky and impetuous.

Q. What are your most popular stationery offerings?

A. Our Holy Crap card line continues to get the most feedback; our licensed stationery products and crossover gift items such as Inviting Company's cocktail napkins and memo pads and our purse pads and flasks from Luckie Street are extremely popular. The Erin Smith Art calendar sold out in December last year, even on sites such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon, so we recommend getting it early this year!

Q. Please share the direction your line will be taking.
A. This summer we are not only introducing our newest card line, Excuse Moi, but we have also jumped into the world of party supplies and announce "Reality Bites," our line of cupcake sleeves and toppers.

Q. If you couldn't do this, what would you do instead?
A. I would be independently wealthy and live on an island where I would work on my exotic shell collection and container gardens while tirelessly devoting myself to finding the world's best Prosecco.
