INDUSTRY PROFILE
Q & A: Melissa Danaher
Bella Ink
Q. When and how did you start working in this business?
A. Bella Ink started in 2005 and I honestly didn't have a plan. I went to a local card store and showed her a few hand-glittered invites; she suggested I go to the Chicago Merchandise Mart and find a rep group to sell my line. I found a showroom and the owner told me she loved my look and to design 64 more invites and print 2,000 of each version.
When the printer delivered 128,000 invites to my home, I realized they all had to be hand-glittered and after a few weeks our entire house sparkled, including the dog. I hired a great crew of women that worked out of my home until the village threw us out for creating traffic jams with shipments and deliveries.
We've moved three times since then and are now in a beautiful studio with a 6,000-square-foot warehouse. Most of the people that I first hired are still with me today and I don't know what I would do without them.
Q. What is your signature style?
A. I hand draw almost every design and pattern that I have. I don't think I have one signature style, but whatever I produce has a unique look that says Bella Ink: unique, fresh, funky, bohemian, chic.
Q. What are your most popular stationery offerings?
A. Right now our initial notes and greeting cards are flying off the shelf and our invitations are always consistent. We are also offering more
"giftable items" and notebooks, recipe cards and bookmarks all seem to be a big hit.
Q. Please share the direction your line will be taking.
A. We are going to stick with what's working: invites, greeting cards, folded notes, calendars, note pads, etc. We would also like to introduce even more gift items.
Q. If you couldn't do this, what would you do instead?
A. I would love to get into surface/fabric design. I'm obsessed with drawing patterns, playing with color and layering designs.
